Part-Time or Full-Time Parenting Coach? How to Start Without Leaving Your Job

PParikshit Jobanputra · India's Leading Parenting Coach · 22+ Years 21 October 2026 12 min read

Should you become a parenting coach part-time or full-time? Parikshit Jobanputra shares his own journey from selling credit cards to full-time coaching - and the simple LATE formula (Learn, Apply, Teach, Earn) to start without leaving your job.

In almost every webinar I conduct, one question always comes up: "Sir, should I leave my job to become a parenting coach?"

My honest answer is always the same: not yet. Start part-time. Build your skills, your confidence and your reputation slowly. Go full-time only when your coaching practice is truly ready for it.

I say this from my own life, not from theory. Today I am known as India's leading parenting coach, but my journey did not start on a stage. It started in a very ordinary place - and it started part-time.

In this blog, I will share my own story and the simple formula I followed, which I now teach to every new coach. I call it the LATE formula: Learn, Apply, Teach, Earn. If you follow these four steps in the right order, you can build a meaningful parenting coach career without taking unnecessary risks.

My Own Story: From Selling Credit Cards to Coaching Parents

I started this career at the age of 20. At that time, I was working a regular sales job - I was selling credit cards. It paid my bills, but my heart was somewhere else. I was deeply interested in understanding people, families and children.

So I did not quit my job. Instead, I started learning and practising parenting guidance in the evenings and on weekends, alongside my credit card job. Small sessions, small groups, constant learning.

For five full years, I did this work part-time. Five years of patience. Five years of building skill, trust and a small but growing circle of parents who believed in my guidance.

Only after those five years - when my coaching work had grown strong enough to stand on its own feet - did I convert it into my full-time career, at the age of 25. Looking back, that patient part-time start was the best decision of my professional life.

Every big stage starts with small part-time steps.

The LATE Formula: Learn, Apply, Teach, Earn

Most people who want to become coaches make one big mistake: they want to earn first and learn later. That never works. Parents trust you with their most precious responsibility - their child. You must earn that trust step by step.

The LATE formula keeps the steps in the right order. Let me explain each one in detail.

L - Learn: Build Your Foundation in Parenting and Child Psychology

Everything begins with learning. Before you guide any parent, you must understand how a child's mind works, how emotions develop, why children behave the way they do, and how parents' own patterns shape the home environment.

This means learning the basics of child psychology, child development, emotional intelligence, communication skills and age-wise parenting challenges - all within the Indian family context of joint families, board exams, grandparents and cultural expectations.

A structured certification program gives you this foundation in the right sequence, with live practice and feedback. Reading random books and watching random videos is a start, but it leaves gaps - and gaps show up in front of real parents.

If you want to first experience how I teach these concepts, you can attend my free parenting webinar - it will give you a real taste of child psychology in simple, practical language. And when you are ready to go deeper, here is what to check before joining a parenting coach certification.

A - Apply: Practise What You Learn, Starting With Yourself

Knowledge without application is just information. The second step is to apply what you are learning - first in your own life and home, then with people around you.

If you are a parent, apply the techniques with your own child. If you are a teacher, apply them in your classroom. Notice what works, note what does not, and ask why.

Then start offering free practice sessions - to friends, relatives, parents in your society or your school group. Take notes after every session. Ask for honest feedback. Each conversation will teach you something no book or course can.

This stage does two things: it builds your confidence, and it gives you your first real stories and testimonials - which later become the foundation of your reputation.

T - Teach: Share Your Knowledge Publicly

Once you have learned and applied, it is time to teach. Teaching is how the world discovers that you exist - and it is how your own understanding becomes deeper.

Today, teaching does not require a stage or a big budget. You can make short Instagram reels with one practical parenting tip each. You can start a YouTube channel and explain common problems like screen time, anger or exam stress. You can record a podcast, host small online webinars, or create simple online courses.

You can also teach offline - offer a free talk at your child's school, your housing society, your office or a local community group. Schools are always looking for good parenting sessions for their parents.

Do not wait to become perfect before you teach. Teach what you have genuinely learned and applied. Your honesty and simplicity will connect with parents far more than any polish.

E - Earn: Multiple Ways a Parenting Coach Can Earn

Now comes the fourth step - earn. Notice that earning comes last, not first. When you have learned properly, applied sincerely and taught consistently, enquiries start coming to you. Parents begin asking: "Can you guide me personally?"

At that point, several honest income streams open up for a parenting coach:

One-to-one consultation - personal sessions with individual parents or couples, online or in person. This is where most coaches begin earning.

Group programs and courses - a 4, 8 or 12-week program for a batch of parents, or a recorded online course on a specific topic like screen time or teenage communication.

Workshops for schools and companies - paid sessions for parents, teachers or employees.

Content-based income - as your teaching grows, YouTube monetization, Instagram brand collaborations and podcast sponsorships can add to your income.

Membership communities - a monthly membership where parents get ongoing guidance, live Q&A sessions and a supportive community.

You do not need all of these on day one. Start with one-to-one consultations, then add the others one by one as your audience grows. Curious about the numbers? Read my honest guide: How Much Can a Parenting Coach Earn in India?

So When Should You Move From Part-Time to Full-Time?

Here is the simple rule I followed myself, and the rule I give every new coach: stay part-time until your coaching income becomes more than your present job income - and stays that way for several months in a row.

Along with that, three things should be true: you have steady repeat clients, new enquiries keep coming without heavy effort, and you have some savings to handle slow months.

That is exactly what I did. Five years part-time alongside my job, and only then full-time. Because I waited for the right moment, my full-time jump was not a risk - it was a natural next step.

And remember: full-time is not superior to part-time. Many excellent coaches - especially mothers and teachers - stay part-time forever by choice, and build beautiful, meaningful practices. Read how mothers do this from home: Parenting Coach Career for Mothers.

Your First Step Today

If this career is calling you, do not overthink the whole journey. Just take the first step of LATE - start learning.

Keep your job. Give a few focused hours every week to learning child psychology and coaching skills. Apply what you learn. Teach what you apply. The earning will follow - just as it did for me.
